homer simpson all the way. i love family guy to death, and i think peter griffin is hilarious in his own way, but when you get right down to it(and i'm sure the creators of family guy would deny it up and down), everything about him is modeled after homer simpson.

I'm not so sure they'd deny that they modeled peter after homer.

Unfortunatly I could'nt find someone to go against you in the "who's the biggest retard?" thread so you win hands down congratulations!

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD at May 5,2006 11:57am
I love both shows, but I gotta give it to Homer. The appeal of Family Guy has never been the characters (with the exception of Brian and Stewie, of course), but rather the jokes, nostalgia, and satire; you take those out, and no one would give a fuck about any of the characters in the family if they dropped dead tomorrow, whereas cartoons like The Simpsons and even South Park develop emotional attachment to their characters so they're more than just one-dimensional joke props. You know that at any moment in Family Guy, someone in the family might be killed in a scene just for a one second laugh, so there's no reason to care or identify with the character. It's like everybody's Kenny.

Ok , I either took what you said out of context or you said you get emotionally attached to the characters of those 2 shows? If so I think you need to be on some meds.

I can't in good conscience vote for Homer Simpson. I grew up on the Simpons like everyone here did, but I hate everything that's become of it. Watching, potentially, the greatest work of satire ever created evolve into the commercial sludge it has been for the last 8 years has been painful. Seriously, think about when the Simpsons started to go downhill... I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. The episodes started to get pretty awful my sophmore year. I'm fucking 24 now, and the show is STILL on the air. Homer was such a great character that just cut straight to the core of the impulsive American male id myth. It was glorious. They've stretched his character so thin now that he's become everything The Simpsons ever said they stood against: hackneyed, forced, sitcom archetypes. It's no better than the later seasons of Family Matters (yes, when Laura fell in love with Steve's cool doppleganer). Awful.

Peter Griffin is clearly influenced by Homer Simpson, however I find his Family Guy far funnier. The first few seasons of Simpsons were great, but I haven't yet seen a Family Guy episode that didn't practically kill me with laughter.

Although I'm always hesitant to turn down free drugs, you did take what I said out of context. I meant emotionally attached as in you give somewhat of a fuck what happens to the character, just like in any good film, show, or book; that way when they have a problem to overcome, you care about what happens. It's the standard for any good work of fiction.

Family Guy (although outstanding, and the best of all the Sunday cartoons last night) could execute all their characters in one scene and no one would give a fuck. South Park themselves actually said the same thing about emotional weight in that Family Guy-bashing episode (just about jokes, not characters). In that episode, Kyle had a nightmare about a terrorist attack where Ike and then him were slowly and graphically roasted face first by the explosion, and it was really effective and showed how fear for his family was able to change his mind politically, grabbing the viewer like something out of a thought provoking movie. Now if Peter Griffin had a dream where his family died like that, would anyone care or take it at all seriously? Even if it wasn't a dream, it would still just be a five second punchline that had no effect on the story.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at May 8,2006 10:38am
I doubt many people would give a fuck today if they executed the entire Simpsons family. They are sick of that show being ground to death.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at May 8,2006 10:39am
i love Family Guy, it is hilarious and chock full of high quality jokes, but it is still subpar to Simpsons and Futurama. actually the Simpsons are subpar to Futurama now.

last nights Simpsons episode was weak. it has gotten to the point now where it is just the usual characters saying cliche lines. plus, marge losing her memory and regaining it before the halfway point of the show was pretty lame. but the Family Guy was fucking hysterical, the LOTR scene with the tree was awesome.

toggletoggle post by DrinkHardThrashHard  at May 8,2006 10:49am
Something tells me that Seth McFarland won't beat Family Guy to death, either. Sure it got some new episodes, and might for awhile, but I doubt he'll drive it to the lengths the Simpsons had.

toggletoggle post by SinisterMinister at May 8,2006 10:52am
So here's what's wrong with the Simpsons now... Family Guy ruined the Simpsons, all they try to do on the show now is grasp at every oppritunity at a quick laugh. The new episodes of the Simpsons are lackluster at best.

But I love me some old school Homer

I have to agree, last night's Simpsons was weak and I was laughing my ass off during the first few minutes of Family Guy.

I think the overall decline of The Simpsons has been greatly exaggerated in this thread, but I will agree there are a few episodes this season that have not been up to par. The Moe's Treasure one was great, and a few others have been pretty good, but some of this season's episodes have been disappointing in their mediocrity; the writers responsible for those episodes need to get canned. I think as long as you have great writers that stay true to the show, you can have great episodes for several more years.

I don't see the same potential longevity for Family Guy, though, because eventually you run out of cool/nostalgic references.

toggletoggle post by ShadowSD at May 8,2006 11:07am
I'm rereading this thread and it sounds like I'm busting on Family Guy, but I'm not, it's one of my favorite shows; I was just pointing out some differences in styles. That and the fact that The Simpsons are getting it pretty hard from some people here (the worst episode of The Simpsons is WAY better than the best episode of Family Matters as far as I'm concerned).

I think that might actually be a more apt comparison: South Park and Family Guy. Both filthy and relentless. That said, I still laugh more during Family Guy.

anyone watching family guy can see the similarities between to homer but peter was modeled after a RISD security guard. or some other RI art school. eat my fat vagina.
