Not a new "real" SAMAEL album, but two recordings by SAMAEL (or at least Xy and Vorph)... I got the double-disc (could have just about fit on one though at 78 or so min. total) at Newbs for $9.99 on sale and highly recommend anyone else not scared off by the band's electronic direction of the past decade do the same ASAP. No guitars, but the production(s) are more akin to the upfront, crisp sounds of Exodus and Reign of Light than the somewhat obscure, occasionally muddy Eternal. I suppose both discs kind of fall under the umbrella of EBM; Era One is very solid song-oriented stuff, while Lesson In Magic is a bit more abstract. These brothers can do no wrong, I'm so stoked this stuff finally saw the light of release.

It's a pretty cool release, I thought I had read that one of these (Era One?) was what they submitted to Century Media before the split, and before they put out Reign of Light.

Indeed... They played it on the PA before their set on the last US tour, fall 2003 or whenever it was. Far, far too long ago, though I'm not gonna hold my breath for another show till maybe late next year some time.

I've generally liked everything this band has done, except for some of those rappy bits on Reign of Light. These CDs are pretty good, I usually spin them with some other EBM or ritual ambient.
