Love this trade. Wily Mo Pena is only 24 and if he gets the chance to play every day this year, he'll hit 35HR, 100RBI's easily. Arroyo was our 7th starter, and they only start 5. See ya cornrows, thanks for the memories, have fun in Cincy.

i've been wanting the sox to get dr. wily for a while and i've wanted arroyo out of town for a while too, so this trade is perfect for me.

I've never been an Arroyo fan, so I'm glad he's out and Pena is an awesome aquisition.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Mar 20,2006 2:56pm
pena will strike out alot, but his power will make up for that.

And he's only TWENTY FOUR!!!!

Nobody would take Clement. Arroyo was the only bargaining chip we had. (although the trade was bronson AND cash for Wily Mo, which kinda confuses me) Mo Pena is basically Ortiz when he first came to the sox, as far as hitting. Power, lotta k's, but will benefit from hitting in Fenway. Especially when he gets tips from two of his favorite hitters, Pappi and Manny.

As far as Trot goes, this was a good move. Even if Trot has a great year, the odd's we re-sign him next year are slim. And i hate saying that, cuz I love Trot. This is def a plus.

anyone believe the gossip about trading arroyo to make room for Clemens? doubt it...

toggletoggle post by whiskey_weed_and_women  at Mar 20,2006 5:39pm
yeah i dont see that happening at all, so we signed gonalez and this dood to platoon out in rf with nixon. ouch, and im sorry but i dont think trot ever lived up to the hype when he first came to the sox so ill be glad to see him go. as far as i was concerned rf was always a giant hole for them.

good to see we could have 4 guys in the line up who can hit 30+ HR in a season.

and just for the record, i like arroyo. he's a solid 5, has improved every year here, and he loves this town. this trade will either make or break his career. i feel bad, i think the sox kinda dicked him over.

big time !

but they got the jr. rocket waiting in the wings

toggletoggle post by DomesticTerror at Mar 20,2006 5:48pm
i bet this has something to do with trading Manny...august should be interesting...

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Mar 20,2006 5:50pm
Guys, baseball's queer. I'm only pointing this out because I love you.

NOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!

and thats to scott's post

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Mar 20,2006 5:53pm
i wish they could have traded manny for tejada. that would have ruled. manny's a nutcase, but i'd only want to trade him if the sox got something awesome for him, like tejada.

this is manny's last year on the contract, right? wouldn't you rather get a little something for him instead of absolutely nothing? there is NO WAY he would re-sign, unless he got a divorce. I love watching manny, i wanna see him break some records here, but mark my words, come august i bet he's gone!

toggletoggle post by whiskey_weed_and_women  at Mar 20,2006 5:57pm
no its not, we have him thru 07 or 08 i believe. i think it's ortiz's last year but we have an option for next year too.

good thing i've got 11 games, and counting...

holy shit, you're right!
nevermind then, i retract that theory.
until next year...

Arroyo sucks his curveball is so goddamn predictable you can see him throw before he even okays the pitch. He has a great slider though but when you throw your slider as slow as he throws his fastball motherfuckers can tee off on that. It doesnt make a player good just becasue he seems like a cool dude either. I dont expect the sox to do much this year anyways.

Wily Mo Pena, I think, will have to prove himself this year with the Sox. Pitching has always been the Red Sox's problem and trading Arroyo isn't helping. Arroyo, in my opinion, was a solid player who just happened to have problems getting his breaking ball down. Bronson played his heart out for the Red Sox and I'm sorry to see him go.

As for the right field issue.....Trot will be gone next year unfortunately and Wily Mo Pena will take his place. It will be a solid outfield if Manny shuts his mouth and just plays.

Big Papi will NEVER leave Boston. When his contract expires, I expect the Sox management to do everything to get another long term contract for him. Ortiz loves Boston too much to leave.

I predict the Sox to do what they did last year; go to the playoffs but get knocked out the first round. The team needs to build a bit more this season and next season they will kick some ass.

Most people I have talked to are pissed off because he is a good guy and shit, not because they think he is a good pitcher. The red sox probably want a better pitcher, hopefully they succeed.

i think they need to make some kinda trade for soriano since hes pissed off down in dc and then our infield would be solved for next season.

besides some more solid bullpen help i think the sox have a good team on the field. i dont see'em getting back to the series but def into the playoffs as they do almost every year i can remember or well at least make it a good race, but yeah def gonna get knocked off either by chisox or the angels.

Soriano is vastly overrated. His fielding is spotty and his bat away from Arlington last year was horrid. For 10 mil a year, I'll pass.

Wily Mo Pena is a legit 40 HR potential guy. He's been in the majors since he was 20 and already has 51 career HR's over the last three years in spot time. He's built like a tank:

Yep pretty much. Another stupid move on the Sox, but then again theyve been making stupid moves forever. Baseball is all about PITCHING.
Fuck the Sox anyway. Im not a Sox fan and before you even think it I fuckin hate the Yankees too

Arroyo was our SEVENTH starter. Would you start him ahead of Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Tim Wakerfield, David Wells, Matt Clement or Jon Paplebon? Because I sure as hell wouldn't. They've also got Jon Lester waiting in the wings. Starting pitch was not the problem last year and it won't be the problem this year.

They traded from a strength to fill a weakness. Great trade.

i'd much rather have loretta handling second base than soriano making errors. he should shut his mouth and play outfield in DC. he blows at second.

Bombs away
By Chris Snow, Globe Staff

Wily Mo Pena just took batting practice. He hit some absolute bombs -- one off the scoreboard in left center, one over the scoreboard, and a smattering onto the field behind the left-field wall.

He's going to get an at-bat or two today, Terry Francona said.

Pena, who was to start in left field for the Reds, said he's OK with a part-time role.

"That's ok," he said. "They told me they're going to give me a chance against the lefty. I'm going to play a lot against lefties. So I have to make the opportunity. When the opportunity comes I have to be ready. I know I was going to be a starter in Cincinnati. So I have to adjust my game and keep working hard."

Pena, on Fenway: "That's a great ballpark. We were there last year. That was my first time. I said, I can't believe I'm here. Now I'm going to be there a lot."

How many homers could he hit if he played every day? "I don't know. I don't want to say that. I'm not going to say I can hit that many."

Pena said he played first base in the Dominican during winter ball but Francona said he'll be strictly an outfielder.

"The best I play is center field and right field," he said. "Like I told them, if they need me everywhere I just need to be ready."

Asked how much he weighs, he said: "About 250. I guess." He stopped to wag his tongue, suggesting he could be a bit bulkier, though it looks to be largely muscle. "When I get here I was like 260. I said to myself, I have to get down to 250, 245."
