heretic hybrid: they were on the stage when I walked in the door. Honestly, I didn't really know if a band was playing or not. The only tip off was the fact that tye drums sounded real. Anyhow, I ran in and caught the last few songs by them. I really have now clue what they sound like. The sound mix for them sucked. I couldn't heard the guitar or the vocals. I guess it tells you what's up when they end their set saying "sound guy you are a fucking idiot."

there are probably like 30-ish people here now, I'm guessing, but it's already hard to see across this place due to the gay cancerous smoke. Also, there is a barricade up against the monitors. That sucks. At the last show I was able to sit on those and take pictures. Now the only way to get to those is from the stage.

henchmen, the: I remeber hearing good things about the when they played somewhere like obriens or something. I guess this is a new line up. They just covered a bunch of songs and didn't play any originals. They played slayer, megadeth, black label, and um.. Megadeth. They had a bunch of problems with the guitar which held them up between each song.. For the must part, I didn't like the singer. He didn't seem very sure of what he was doing on the stage. That is to say until the seek and destroy. you would have thought he would have been able to sing the megadeth songs well since he had them on all his clothing. Still, the last song sort of came together for them and they played really well. I think that the singer was bleeding or something, not sure. all in all I think they could be good, but they just didn't seem together almost like they haven't played any shows.

imnot sure how or why I know what aquanet smells like, but this place smells like aquanet.

recognizer: it's been almost 5 years since I saw these guys. They are a lot better now than back then it sounds like a lot of the same old songs but updated with better guitar playing. They still have that over all numetally pantera sound to them, but the songs are heavier, the vocals too. I like the ones they did first/second the best. Junior's act on stage almost reminded me of norm macdonald.

wow, this show is flying by. crotalus (8:55-9:35) is up in 5, then CSDO (9:50-10:40) and overkill (11+)

ok, now there may be or have been 100 people through here during the night so far, but its been about 50-60 at one time. a lot of the opening bands brought crowds which seem to have left.

crotalus: kevins vocals were a lot more slayer this time. Actually, there were a lot more riffs and stuff that I pulled out of their music that sounded slayery. They ended their set with judas priest painkiller. Some guy from the crowd got up and sang thw song with them, he was really good.

candy striper death orgy: awe, eric set the result out to me and phil and a song about poliferation out to godless rising and neversaynever.by the end for their set, there was getting close to 100 people in the crowd. Anyhow, I must say, with mike justin behind the crotalus kits the drums sounded awesome. Double bass and all. I don't know if they've all practice together or not, but the playing was tight. They got 10 minutes clipped off the end of their set for some reason.

OVERKILL-overkill completely owned. what a killer band to see live, argueably the best live band period. i thought they sounded excellent and i was really into the fact they played 98% old shit, i think only one new song. They deliver the meaning of old school in that regard. highlight......Blood Money. I never heard them play that one. most of their set was the usuals, which are all drinking athems to me. blitz between song banter was as entertaining as the charades he does coinciding with the songs. i like the anti-yankees rants. opened with deny the cross, one of my favorites. i had mixed feelings about the club. definetely a week night club. i hate to see a summer time, saturday night draw in there. not alot of space. i think it needs to be bigger and have strippers dancing around the band room area. no moshing=gay. and, the only thing gayer than those "tough guy" "trying to look mean" bouncers, are the people who think opeth is a better band than overkill.
what kind of world do we live in when we got people actually thinking that. FUCK YOU!!!

the dude from the henchmen was bleeding all over the place. they also cover pantera.

This was CROTALUS'S first time playing @ Mark'sShowplace and I have never been there, the sound inside is REAL GOOD. They have tight security and frisk everyone as they come through.

OverKill sounded awesome...... much better than Club 125 in Bradford... This seems like a good place to see your favorite metal.

Crotalus only got to practice once since our last show so I was a bit nervous starting off, we had to move out of our band space and need to find another place to play besides my living room! We can and will do better @ our next show, EXODUS, CANDY STRIPER, CROTALUS in May. I am really looking forward to this show and seeing EXODUS live!!!!!!!!

We got TONS of compliments and it is nice to see that people are getting our CD and know some of the music. We are nearing completion of our next CD, this one is going to be AWESOME, it is all over the place with lots of good metal. There is not a single shit song on it.

Eric from Candy Banger is EVERYWHERE....... if there is a big metal act coming through a local dingy club Eric will have CSDO on the bill.... Luckily Eric throws us on those bills too. THANKS ERIC!!!

Isn't there a shredding lead guitarist out there that wants to JOIN CSDO????????????
Get that other GUITARIST ERIC!!!!!!!

It will give you the room you need.....

My neck..... my head feels like it is made of lead, too much head banging......

HENCHMEN...I think it was the Lead Guitarist that was bleeding not the singer. I don't think bloody fingers and guitar sounds like much fun. They started with SLAYER and everyone crawled out of the corners to watch... COOL!

Recognizer seemed tight with a strong singer.

My neck........ugghhhh....

Kevin

Mark's would attract more folks if they allowed people to dance (within reason). Mcfuckin security almost broke my toe when they marched a kid out and stepped on my foot, that was appearantly jumping up and down too hard. Another one elbowed my wife in the sternum when they took someone else out too. We both would have been fine if they just left shit alone! TNT Security needs some moderation in tolerence and drop the tough guy bullshit!!!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 3,2006 9:14am
it's the club that tells them to do that since it's the same security that was at the bombshelter.
talking with one of them last night, they miss the bombshelter and the dancing cause there was always something interesting like a fight to break up.

awesome show last night. i was impressed with how tight overkill was and their energy on stage. csdo and crotalus sounded great, suprising better than the brickhouse (who i think has one the best consistant mixes) it sucks heretic hybrid got the sound check, but it was the same deal the night before for the openers for nothingface. the sound guy should be fired. i saw staff frantically searching for him during all the confusion right before csdo went on. he couldn't have picked a worse time to be away from the board.

other interesting stories: our guitarist got into a debate about handing out flyers and promoting our shows in and outside of the venue with one of the staff from marks. i don't know what his problem was. he even went to the extent of going out side to check the ground in between cars to see if he could find flyers, luckily there weren't any. lego your crew cut ego...

Last night was a LOT of fun.

[rant]
The fucking security at that place needs to fucking chill though. As a member of one of the bands playing the club, I've never been pushed around like that.

At one point I walked past the bathroom area with my beer while Overkill were on stage. Apparently one of the door chicks was trying to stop me because I had a beer in my hand, and I guess you're not allowed to be in that area with beer....wtf? Anyways, she was saying it as I was still 12 feet away from her, so, between that and the fact Overkill (who was fucking LOUD) were playing right behind me, I couldn't hear her. Next thing you know, the cop at the door stops me, and is yelling, "HEY!!! HEY!!! THIS YOUNG LADY IS TRYING TO SAY SOMETHING TO YOU. DON'T YOU FUCKING LISTEN??? WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU???".

Not to mention, we weren't allowed to step foot outside of the club and come back in without a major hassle. Some security asshats wouldn't even LET me go outside if I planned on getting back in. No amount of explaining that I'm in one of the bands and I need to get something out of my car or whatever worked on these smackers.

[/end rant]

Anyways, great show. I can't wait for the Exodus show!

Hey Steve, forgot to mention Mark(mike) from CSDO said a big time thanks when he gave me that LOOT!!!

We all want a cut BITCH!!!

That's like .8 cents each after gas money....Pete is PISSED that you are trying to HIDE it!!
I did not really even want to say much about the security since it seems harder to find a club that sounds good, has space and is not some terrible shit hole.... I did kind of feel like a shit bag every four or five minutes when we first got there and we were unloading.... They should have kicked my ass just to end there boredom and to IMPRESS ALL! Very tight security with a BAD attitude!

The crowd last night gave HOPE for the local metal scene, there was actually people there!!!!

I don't know if it stinks because there just may be too many bands that sound like dribble and people get disappointed going to a show to see a good band and a bunch of clones....

I am still LOST on the new metal thing....... I do obssess over Lamb of God but that is not really new metal...

Eric, bring me in on your practice....I'll do three or so songs for you live!!!!! Your mommy can yell at ME!!!!

Aaron(REVEREND), I don't know HOW you do all your pics, load them up, do reviews and make sure you spell "STRIPER" and actually work @ a Computer job.... Pretty impressive.....

and....... still try to say the positive things about each band you see....

When can you review the CROTALUS CD? I think you have way too much free time on your hands!!!!!

Thanks - Kevin

first off, the overall mark's experience is a positive. but after having been to 4 shows there, i have some serious bitching to do.

1) the no-mosh rule. i'm not exactly sure why they don't allow moshing whatsoever. lighthearted pushing even results in scolding by the TNT crew. this isn't about the TNT guys being jerks, though. they're just doing what they're told; it's mark's management that has put the rule in place. keep in mind that many of the same TNT guys worked at the bomb shelter, and many of them were always cool and approachable there. so my question is, what do they gain by not allowing moshing? perhaps a) shit doesn't get broken. but as it is anyway, they have at least 2 or 3 guys with an eye on the crowd, so how about they just get involved when things get unnecessarily rough or fights start? b) fights don't happen [as often]. c) no liability (but if they expressly point out that moshing is at your own risk, they won't be liable, no?). sometimes it just doesn't even feel like a show atmosphere there when you see a sea of people standing still and bobbing their heads.

2) the price of alcohol... for fuck sake, let us get drunk for less than $50!

3) NO FLYERS. GOD FORBID the local bands try to promote themselves and increase the popularity of the overall local scene and create a more loyal following, ie. fans who will keep coming back and paying $5 for a beer that should cost $2. last night we started off just outside the door handing out flyers -- 1 a general NeverSayNever flyer, 1 promoting our show this saturday. granted, the show promotion flyer was for a different venue, so i can see why they'd oppose that. at first we were told we couldn't hand them out "in here". so i said, "oh, so can we hand them out out there?", and the mark's guy in the black shirt said yes. then he added, "but if we find any on the ground, we'll find you guys and fine you for littering." i'm tempted to look up the legality of this issue, given that my handing a piece of paper to a person (who willingly takes it) is not me putting paper on the ground, nor is it encouraging other people to do so.

anyway, we went outside, minutes later to find the same security guy in the black shirt had exited from the strip club door and looped around to the show entrance, checking the parking lot to see if any flyers were on the ground. he didn't see any, so as he passed i said, "looks like they all wanted to KEEP IT!" he muttered something like "you're lucky" or "you're good so far". so instead of risking "littering", i had a smoke. then a TNT guy in a red shirt came out and asked us if we were handing out flyers -- i said, "not anymore!" and he told us that his boss told him to come out and tell us not to. if my thought processes were quicker at the moment, i would have asked to talk to his boss so i could figure out what the real problem is. but it just pissed me the fuck off to be treated that way by people in a venue that is entirely dependent on the local scene and people like US in bands who promote our shit and get people to come out to shows.

i personally feel like if they continue to run things as they have, they might be able to stick around, but they won't be considered the best place to go, and if people continually get the feelings i do about the place, they'll just stop going altogether. the problem is that mark's currently has no competition for booking national acts. seems to me they run it as a business and nothing more, they don't give half a shit about music, the scene, or the musicians who do the legwork to bring people into their venue.

toggletoggle post by bowelskinfacecloth at Mar 3,2006 3:56pm
i only payed 3 dollars a beer, and im surprised they served bottles, who anyone that was there thought about cracking one on a bouncers head. if so grumpy over minimum wage, go to police academy and be a real pillar of society.

This was the FIRST time in over 15 years of going to shows, being in shows, booking/managing shows, that I was FULLY searched AND on the guess list for NF on Tues/Wed night; I ever had their lighting direct with me as we went in. Very, very, very wierd and annoying. I was at the Recher in MD on the 11th and they do an amazing job of pat downs, and allow people to dance, but keep security in the crowd at all times in case shit gets outta hand. Want to know how it should be done? Go to the Recher in Towson sometime, that's how you set up, own, run, a club and they sure as shit know how to treat bands; nicest greenrooms in the mcfuckin country!!!

Totally agreed that Marks is better than the Bombshelter, that was super shitty to have national acts play there; a mcfucking insult! Like the Muse in Memphis. Squatters' crackhouse! Mark's needs a bit of tweekin and it would be the full on shit! Move the bar outta the way of the stage left and take out about 2-3 pool tables, allow some acceptable dancin, lower the costs of drinks, put in a back door stage entrance for bands, and I think they're there...of course strippers on stage would be over the mcfucking top too!!!!

Well, last night was certainly the first show out of all the shows I've been to at Mark's where the security was as out of control as it was. I was there last Thursday for Sonata Arctica and it was NOTHING like this.

And btw - $3 a beer may not be as cheap as the local dank pit, but it's certainly better than MANY of the larger venues that get national acts. Anyone been to the Worcester, Palladium lately? It's $5 or more for a beer there now. THAT'S a fucking racket!

The no moshing/slamming thing has to be taken care of........ I had people telling me that they might not come back if they can't slam........ I wanted run around and slam when Over Kill hit the stage.........

Anyway, the show went well..... I was told that the club would be doing radio ads...... Well, they didn't!! Roadkill from Recognizer mentioned it on the Morning Buzz. That was about it.......... If the fuckin' radio ads ran. The place would've been packed!! A few years ago we played with Over Kill at Jarrod's. Jarrod spent $3000.00 on radio ads on waaf. And, the show sold out over capacity around 800!! The same thing for the Biohazard show he did with the $3000.00 in radio ads....... The clubs have to learn. If you want to make money you have to spend money!!

Anyway, the total draw for the show was around 200....... Everybody sounded good........ Crotalus kicked ass!! Thanks again guys for letting us use your drums and cabs........ And a big Yo to Godless Rising, Never Say Never and Downfall!!!!!!!!!

I'm happy...... I made $400.00 selling our new Got Thrash? t-shirts.........

wtf are you guys talking about the sound being killer there.
last night, the only sound was only killer if you were 10 ft out from the front of the stage. until overkill, the monitors were really working and when anyone asked to turn them up, he couldn't. when eric asked, he did and they sounded like a wall of noise.

during most of the bands, the mix was terrible.

the speakers that were on the stage were moved to the floor. this would have been awesome if we heard from our feet. this leaves the only other speakers aimd at our ears to be the ones on the cieling 10 feet back from the stage.

at sonata arctica, the sound was good but the speakers were up on the stage.

the club rents the speakers from daddys or where ever. they don't own their own system so they just get whatever from the rent place.

Well, I was looking for the GOOD and the sound there seemed better than some of the other places we have played at(not many!) Places like the BOMB SHELTER.... that was no great sound!

The stage was bigger and it seemed like the sound was spread out for us and we could hear ourselves better. I was standing in center stage 10-15' back and I thought the sound seemed ok......

You are way better of critic than any of us since you goto so many shows...

Ok, we Suck, you suck, the club SUCKS, the metal scene sucks, chicks with dicks suck and EMOS SUCK!!!!

Pretty pathetic when we have to be thankful for getting to play a show with an AUDIENCE, an ok sound but not a bit of moshing... I'd take that over some shit hole with three ragged dudes drunk at the bar!

Maybe if they actually advertised a bigger act like OVERKILL on the radio they would actually realize they may get more than a few hundred people there!

If EXODUS does not pack the place then we are truely DOOMED!

oh, the club really does have potential. they just need to get a sound/acustic engineer in there and not just daddy's junk music.

don't you remember the sound guy saying a bunch of times if you want to hear it, you have to go in front of the stage. he said this to all the people bitching about the vocals on the side.

I spoke to the bartender, nicole, who runs their website/myspace and she said that they were working on dropping $15K on a sound system for that place.

Mark's is still a bit new when it comes to holding shows with national acts. Give em a bit of time, and shit will likely get better.

Out of the hundreds of shows I've played, whether it's with Blistered Earth, Crotalus, or Frozen....Mark's is DEFINITELY one of the better stages/systems to play on. However, it's imperative you get your OWN soundguy. Every band I play with uses the same dude, and it's proven to be a saving grace time and time again.

wtf are you guys talking about the sound being killer there.
last night, the only sound was only killer if you were 10 ft out from the front of the stage. until overkill, the monitors were really working and when anyone asked to turn them up, he couldn't. when eric asked, he did and they sounded like a wall of noise.

during most of the bands, the mix was terrible.

the speakers that were on the stage were moved to the floor. this would have been awesome if we heard from our feet. this leaves the only other speakers aimd at our ears to be the ones on the cieling 10 feet back from the stage.

at sonata arctica, the sound was good but the speakers were up on the stage.

the club rents the speakers from daddys or where ever. they don't own their own system so they just get whatever from the rent place.

Of course the sound is gonna be lousy for the opening bands. Its always like that. But CSDO sounded fine to me

Who gives a fuck if the show packs in or not!! Go and support Exodus.Their one of the best old school Thrash bands of all time. Why blow the $$ on the ridicolous ticket price to see them at the palladium when u can see them at Marks for cheaper.Plus they'll play a longer set there.

I got the final word from Bernie (promoter from New England concerts) on how many people that paid to get in....... It was a little over 220. Plus bands and crews, add another 30 to 40 people.

I didnt get to the club until 10 that night(difficult place to find) and there were no more than 100 people there at that time.I hate it when the opening bands bring their friends, then they leave after their done playing.Thats so GAY!!!!!!

I got there late, due to being 2 hours away and having to drive up in a snow storm. Missed all the openers aside from the last 3 or 4 CSDO tunes.
CSDO sounded great as always...really tight.
Overkill sounded great as well, but the lack of RELIX material aside from "old school" which is total ass, was dissapointing. I also wish these guys would play more FTF and TO material. They also need to drop Rotten, Elimination and Gutter forever. Enough's enough. That was my 16th Overkill show in 19+ years. I dont want to hear those songs ever again.
As far as the No mosh rule goes, at nearly 36 years of age, I could really give a shit, but its a stupid rule that will no doubt eventually spell the end for this place, but until then, Ill be there whenever there's a band worthy of driving 2 hours to see ie; EXO-DETH on 5/1.
As far as drink prices go. I drank only mixed drinks ($3.00 each! - you cant beat that) and they were made very well and shots of Jack, which were also reasonable.
Someone mentioned the palladium. I refuse to drink there because on top of the outrageous prices for mixed drinks, they make 'em super weak.

Stop bitching about the setlist LOL!!! Shows are few and far between around here so I'll take any songs a bands plays. But it would have been cool if they did play more songs off of Relixiv and Killbox 13.I agree on the moshing thing, who gives a fuck!!! Now all we need at Marks is for the sluts to show their CUNTS!!

metalcore: (mEt'l kôr): n

To Aaron, or anyone else who was there, maybe you can answer this for me. What did the Henchmen's singer do with the book he had (I'm assuming it's a bible). I just noticed that in some pictures he had it and I'm curious as to what he did with it.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Mar 9,2006 6:37pm
he was reading slayer lyrics out of it. reading "from the book of slayer"

overkill: this is a band that no matter how many times I see them, they will never fail to put on a good show. they are only of the only bands from their era (along with destruction)who's live show and CDs have been good through out. Before they came out there were a ton of people crawling around the stage. fixing the lights and the sound. these people should have been on that dan stage for all the bands. maybe then the sound/lighting would have been a lot better. anyhow, I knew that I would be cutting out before the very end of their set. this meant that I would probably be missing my favorite song by them, deny the cross. to my surprise, the came right out with this one. yeah! they had a lot of smoke and flashing lights. I would have been able to get better shots if I had a little bit of room along the front but whatever. the crowd was really into it too and packed up along the front. I had to reach over people's heads, but Bobby Blitz shot me a bunch of posers and smiles while I snapped.
