i don't care how talented they are, or how big of guitar heroes they are - white people have no reason to play the blues. ever. you want real feeling and true soul in blues music, listen to a black man play it. fuck eric clapton, fuck SRV...white people are only in it to show off their fancy fingerwork.....it's not just knowing what notes to play it's WHY they need to be played in the first place.

true for the most part, but please leave SRV out of this. he had more soul in his left pinky than you have in your entire body. no white guy ever played the blues like stevie.

toggletoggle post by whiskey_weed_and_women  at Nov 30,2005 12:23am

"That's my whole year, that people could like blues. The problem is who's been playing it, what's the sentiment behind it, what's the need behind it," he says. "Most people who play blues ... they're playing for themselves, and I'm thinking about how to get blues to other people. And that's through pop music. (Eric) Clapton does it, and he makes me want to tear my hair out because I want to do it too."

i understand that the guy was talented, and i would never try to suggest that i could play better than anyone because i can't, haha! but like i said, the secret to good blues music is having a reason to be blue, and i don't mean like "my wife left me, i'm feeling blue" that's just being a ball-less weenie. if your wife leaves you, suck it up and move on. when you're living in a society where your race is completely oppressed and hated and your people are continually being shit on, beaten, lynched, etc...and you're constantly living in fear of losing all that's sacred to you, like black people were, it's a lot harder to deal with, and playing the blues was their way of expressing themselves. white people just figured out what sounds were more appealing to a wider audience, and decided to market it for themselves. i'm not trying to bash stevie for his talent, the guy could play, i'm just saying he had no good reason to play the blues besides getting rich off of it.

I don't own any blues albums other than som SRV vinyl. I like listening to NPR, college, and satellite radio stations. I've always liked the Blues.

Ryan....so what ur saying is you basically have to be black to have the blues?
He had no reason to play the blues?
Did you know him personally?
He probably had EVERY reason to play the blues, hence why he did.

I met BB King at like three in the morning two years ago outside of CORT Furniture in Brighton, him and his band were sitting in lawn chairs next to their tour bus just shooting the shit and enjoying the night. Still one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me.

Huddie. Fucking. Ledbetter.

Leadbelly tried to kill or impregnate pretty much every other living person that came across his path. Now that's how to be a blues man. 'Nuff said.
