i'm trying to come up with a formula where i have values that i set for certain cells and i want it to calculate that total per person
for example
here are the cells
Derek Casey
Carina Andrea
Casey Serena
top line = 1
second line = 2
third line = 3
i want it to calculate the points everyone mentioned above has.
i.e.
derek=1
casey=4
etc.
anyone?

I'm not sure what you're asking. You want a column of points per cell, and also want a running total at the bottom? Too easy to do, so I must be missing the question.
let me try to clarify (and perhaps it is easy, i'm just feeling slow right now)
ok so basically it's a spreadsheet with people's name.
it's actually a schedule and people enter in their names for the shift they want to work.
I want to assign points for different shifts and what i want to know is at the end of the week, who has how many points.
Coverage Times Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri
8-Aug 9-Aug 10-Aug 11-Aug 12-Aug
Analyst 8:00 AM EST coverage Serena Kimberly Derek Casey Kimberly
Analyst 8:00 AM EST coverage Liz Liz Carina Andrea Sue
Analyst 5:00 PM EST coverage Andrea Shirley Sue Sue Shirley
Analyst 6:00 PM EST coverage Derek Brandy Casey Serena Liz
Analyst 8:00 PM EST coverage Scott Scott Shirley Scott Carina
dammit it didn't work...i tried to cut and paste the spreadsheet but forget it..didn't work
anyhow, each shift has a certain amount of points allocated to it and since it's a week by week schedule i want to know everyone's point's at the end of the week rather than count them myself wanted to use excel.
ok i think i'm getting it
i am doing formula's for each person
and formula's for the boxes with the same points and then i will do formula to add everyone's totals

Gimme your email address. I have a schedule form I'm working with right now that I could send you. It does exactly what your talking about. I'll send it to you.
When you get it, it's important to remember that the shifts where someone has no hours you MUST enter 0 for the total, don't just leave it blank or it'll fuck up the formulas.
