heard all these bands at some point in my life, off and on, I keep forgetting to ask which release of theirs do you most recommend as a real introduction

christian death, first off. ONLY WITH ROZZ. everything they did with rozz was fucking perfect, dont let anyone tell you other wise. valor is a fucking chode. start with only theatre of pain. seriously, make sure its got rozz. rip

the birthday party: im assuming you know that this is nick caves band. waaay different then later nick cave. cant go wrong with prayers on fire.

dead can dance: this is a tough call because alot of dead can dance stuff bores the shit out of me. but some of it is really tribal and awesome. thats basicly how i describe them to people: tribal funeral music. lisa gerrard has a really cool voice, but im more into the dood in the band. black sun is one of my favorite songs ever, its what i fall asleep to almost every night. im not even sure where you should start, maybe: aion

great, thanks!

toggletoggle post by dan. at May 3,2005 4:07pm
yeah im way into death rock and industrial and goth crap. i usually get made fun of for it. whatever!

toggletoggle post by litacore   at May 3,2005 4:29pm
mmm, I straddle between gothy clang rock (like not whiney, but elvish is OK) and dark ambient

No Commercial Potential on ZBC is my lifeline to some of this stuff

I wanted to check out some of the classics because Newbury's has some old Nick Cave shit for really cheap

and you're right, Christian Death aint poop without rozz

an awesome internet radio station that plays some wicked sweet stuff is ghoul school radio. you should really check it out. its turned me onto sooo much stuff i never would have heard. they play a really wide selection. its a very rare occasion when they will play something that completely sucks.

dead can dance "spleen and ideal"

dead can dance "within the realm of a dying sun"

I can't usually access netcasts, bummer

"Spleen and Ideal" and "Within the Realm of A Dying Sun" are my favorite two Dead Can Dance albums as well. "Into the Labyrinth" is not quite as dark and a little more accessible but it's also pretty good. Lisa Gerrard's performance of "Wind that Shakes the Barley" is incredible.

I've been addicted to Only Theatre of Pain for the past six months or so...I love the punky psychedelic feel of it.

I think you're better off with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds than The Birthday Party, but all Nick Cave still rocks.

christian death- rage of angels
I haven't listened to much birthday party or dead can dance, but that album is fucking great.

you really can't go wrong with DCD or Lisa gerrard...

also, you might want to check out fields of the nephlim (little more country) or eyeless in gaza (little more 80's, but good. the vocals can be grating at times).

and if you are really into christian death, look for death in june, and current 93.

granted, the most beautiful CD ever of which carina spent mad $$ on a gold copy for me is nature and the organisation's cd "Beauty Reaps The Blood Of Solitude". EVERY person should have a copy of this amazing disc. it blows 99% of all those other bands out of the water. anyone who wants a copy and can't find the disc (since it way out of print), I will burn one cause once I do, you'll be on e-mail searching for a original in 10 minutes.

oh and nurse with wound is good too, a little out there in the throbbing gristle sort of way just a little more noisey.
