"Matthew D. LaPlante of The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that a Midvale concert promoter whose heavy metal concert was ruined last week when fans started fighting with band members and with security is blaming local devotees of the Straight Edge movement — and he now plans to exclude members of the anti-establishment group from future shows.

"Every band I talk to is worried to come to Salt Lake because they're worried about the Straight Edgers here," said Solid Entertainment promoter Bobby Baugh, who noted that the group, in most other communities, practices a lifestyle free of violence.

Many Straight Edgers describe their group as an unaffiliated network of people with a similar ideology that eschews drugs, alcohol, sex and civic participation, such as voting. Most members, proponents say, also renounce violence.

Baugh said he will have bouncers screen ticket holders at the door and keep out those who appear to be Straight Edgers.

Baugh said a metal group known as DIECAST was on stage at a downtown Midvale Club on Saturday evening when several Straight Edgers took the stage and began to attack the singer. When members from another band, HATEPIECE, attempted to intervene, they were attacked as well.

Baugh said he invited a Sacramento group, THE HOODS, to play a short set at the concert at the last minute. Though he knew THE HOODS had a Straight Edge following, Baugh figured their late addition to the ticket would prevent many Straight Edge fans from showing up.

"That's where I was wrong," said Baugh, who had five security guards and about 150 fans on hand. "They got on the phone with their friends. Word got out they were here. I really didn't expect it to turn out that way."

No arrests have been made in the fight, in which several security guards and band members were injured. Officers from six agencies responded, but those involved in the fight had left.

Utah gang officers say members of the Straight Edge movement comprise the largest gang in the state. Individual members sometimes affiliate with animal liberation and environmental extremists and have a terroristic bent, police claim."

Do they all have those gay Xs on their hands?
How do you appear straight edge? He should have a big mirror with a few hundred lines cut out on it. Anyone who won't do a line doesn't get in.

HEHEH.
I'll try to find out from diecast what exactly happend. I think it's gay when edgers fight people for not being edge. There are still a few really cool edge kids who aren't gay about it at all, Dave/STF being one of them. There are those who ruin it for the rest of the bunch just like any other scene.

hahaha, the irony here is delicious. I've seen FSU/tuff guys try to beat up another band at a diecast show a few years ago, because the band wasn't hardcore enough. now, they've been attacked for not being straight edge?

group mentality thugs really need to get their enemies straight!

hilarious.

funny thing about the utah straight edge team squad - someone started a rumor in this area not too long ago having to do with said straight edge gang coming up here to literally blow up a PAL hall or some VFW during a show.

I never understood straight edgers. I can understand not wanting to do drugs or drink (sort of) but no sex??? C'mon! Dont these people realize that almost all serial killers were sexually frustrated?? This is not a state of mind you want to be in! If i go more than a week without sex i start getting violent. Imagine what these idiots must be going through!

toggletoggle post by pisscup at Jan 27,2005 1:20pm
I don't think the edgers swear off sex nowadays... or homosexuality for that matter.

toggletoggle post by DaveSTF   at Jan 27,2005 2:02pm
Yeah it really doesn't. It's the belief of living a clean lifestyle. And to some, promiscuous(sp?) sex is unpure. to some it's not.

It makes sense guys like Christraper don't understand that because they just got lines of women waiting to fuck them. You know... guitars for a black metal band, satan worships, frequent visits to RTTP, all characteristics that chicks just are waiting to find in a man to fuck.
just kidding buddy.

I'm indifferent to this whole thing cuz you're hearing one side of a story, it's quite possible that it was just a fight that had nothing to do with a straight edge alliance. Maybe it was a bunch of hardcore kids in general. you never know. Unfortunate anyways.

every time there's a fight at a show you hear "234190 fsu kids jumped a 12 yr old girl", when in actuality there probably weren't any fsu kids there in the first place and the 'fight' was 2 kids kissing. it's probably the same way w/ sxe kids over there...

especially the kissing

Diecast Respond To Violence At Utah Show [ 1.27.2005 ]
In response to the earlier Blabbermouth posting in regards to violence at the recent DIECAST show in Utah bassist Jeremy Wooden checks in to tell everyone what really happened. First off DIECAST never condoned this press release. Not once did we feel threatened or endangered during our performance. The show was going well until the promoter got extremely unorganized and the band's set times started getting cut in half. Both local band played full sets, while the national acts (Winter Solstice, Hoods and us) were limited to 15 min. Once the crowd found out those bands could only play a few songs they started getting upset. Our set started off great and the hardcore kids were dancing and singing along. It appeared that the security have never worked this type of show before and once kids started coming on stage to sing along to "Disrepair" the security began to violently push them away from the stage.

Tired of being repeatedly being pushed away, the kids retaliated on the security. This went back and forth through the remainder of the song and ended up getting way out of hand. It appears that having the kids singing along got misconstrued into them attacking Paul (vocals) and none of DIECAST were attacked or harmed during this performance. It was unfortunate that we only got to play two songs for the fans that came out to see us and we can't wait to come back to play a venue in Utah where the security knows how to handle this type of event.

Due to this press release being issued and the unprofessional actions of promotor Bobby Baugh, DIECAST will never play another event for Solid Entertainment. We thank everyone that came out to support this tour and we will be back soon.
