Quintessential my ass. I am not happy or amused that he died, but I'm moderately amused by how much this has brought out people's true love for awful music...

You know...you didn't have to like Pantera but he was an AMAZING metal guitar player. 90-95% of the guitarists in metal today, underground or otherwise, can't even begin to do what he could. Not only that ,they did a lot for metal in ALL the different genres, death black, thrash, etc. Very disappointing to see some of you not care or appreciate what he has done...again...you didn't have to like Pantera but you can not deny his influence and accomplishments

Pantera helped out Mayhem, Satyricon...maybe not influenced but you don't have to be an influence to help out other metal bands...as far as thrash they came in on the tail end of it with Cowboys...and had a meaner and heavier sound...like a bridge between thrash and some of the heavier music out there now be it commercial or otherwise

'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott killed at 38
Guitarist considered a leading light of metal
Thursday, December 9, 2004 Posted: 1:26 PM EST (1826 GMT)

(AP) -- "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was fatally shot during a performance, was a frenetic, ear-shattering guitarist whose riffs for Pantera and more recently Damageplan were a staple of heavy metal music. He was 38.

Abbott was shot to death as he took the stage Wednesday with Damageplan and began to play the first song of the concert at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio.

Three other people also were fatally shot before a police officer shot to death the gunman.

The deaths shook the heavy metal music industry as colleagues reeled from the news and fans flooded Web sites to share their grief.

"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," Killswitch Engage frontman and former Damageplan tour partner Howard Jones told MTV. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."

Rob Blasko Nicholson, the former Ozzy Osbourne bassist, told the music channel Abbott was a legend.

"I'm speechless," he said. "This is totally unreal."

"When you think of '90s heavy metal or hard rock, Pantera is one of these seminal bands. They are quoted today as influences by many bands," said Tom Calderone, MTV's executive vice president. "Hard rock has lost a legendary guitar player."

Abbott and his brother, former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul, produced Damageplan's debut album, "New Found Power," which was released in February. Other band members are vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.

"Damageplan carries on the tradition Pantera started, the ... hell-raising tradition we were all about," Vinnie Paul Abbott told The Dallas Morning News in October. "We do play some Pantera songs. Me and Dime wrote them, and we feel like we have the right to play them. But the focus is on Damageplan."

Born on August 20, 1966, in Dallas, Darrell Abbott and his brother were introduced to music by their father, country songwriter Jerry Abbott, who owned a recording studio. Although Abbott grew up around country music, he often said he gravitated toward rock music and was influenced by the likes of Tony Iommi, Ace Frehley, Eddie Van Halen and the late Randy Rhodes.

The Abbott brothers and bassist Rex Rocker formed Pantera in 1982. Then Abbott went by the name "Diamond Darrell." Abbott later began to use "Dimebag" and was often referred to as "Dime" by fans and friends.

Pantera's early music leaned more toward hard rock. Joined in 1987 by singer Phil Anselmo, the band began to develop a heavier sound. After releasing a few independent albums, Pantera signed with Atlantic Records in 1990. It was also the period when Abbott came into his own as a guitar player, developing his heavy, frenetic sound that can first be heard on the 1990 album "Cowboys from Hell" and on the 1992 standout "Vulgar Display of Power." It was followed up by 1994's "Far Beyond Driven."

Pantera's manager Kim Zide-Davis, who worked with Abbott 1994 to 2003, was overwhelmed by the news of his death. She told the AP she often told the guitarist he was "a living cartoon character."

"He would do things that you wouldn't believe a real person was capable of," she said.

She said there was a sweet and caring side of Abbott that many people never saw.

"Everything you saw from him was real. That was who he was," she said. "He lived and unfortunately died by his guitar. What you saw on stage was his enjoyment."

Abbott and his brother left Pantera in 2003 and formed Damageplan. In recent years, he also made recording appearances on Nickleback's "The Long Road" and with one of his influences, KISS' Ace Frehley.

Dozens of messages were posted to the Dallas band's Web site after the shootings.

"This is the worst day in metal history," one posting read.

"The metal world feels your pain," another wrote.

ok so i read through the threads i missed last night...

Autopsy 666 you did make some uncalled for comments that i didn't get...unless someone who personally hurt you or people you cared about, died...then i don't get why you'd be so happy that someone died..i didn't like the laughing in that thread about the ebay stuff...

now hoser...why would you want to hit someone who said something you didn't like on the internet? i can understand if it would have been someone you were close to..even powerkok stated that he didn't want to fight..anyhow....i'm just trying to keep the love going on this board.

As i have posted...someone died and that's USUALLY a sad day (unless it was a rapist or serial killer...and even then SOMEONE is sad) but anyhow...on a personal level, this was scary to me...as someone who go to a lot of shows...to know that something like this could happen...Aaron shot Damageplan only a week or so ago...

am i a fan of dimebag? no, i'm not...sorry guys...however, i think what happened is very sad and troubling. All the people selling newspaper and stuff on ebay really pissed me off.

sorry i had to let that out.

Well thanx, i hope no one does ...We(teratism) are saddened and think that dimes murder is a worthless fuckin tragity ...no musician should die for playin...whether you liked them or not..We do not agree with most who have posted on this thread...

He was killed for a reason, a fantastically hilarious reason.
Good riddance to Damage Plan!

That has got to be the worst thing said yet. You should see my shrink, he might be able to help you. shit, even I can help you.... Spend 1/2 the time you spend on this site, doing something to better yourself. start w/ your label & the talent within it. you should try a little weed too, it might level you out.

"no one likes dimebag or his playing so why is everyone suddenly all ass broken over it?"

wow guys, who would have thought? A death metal guitarist putting in a word about dime's death....

"HATE ETERNAL Guitarist: 'DIMEBAG's Spirit Will Carry On Forever' - Dec. 14, 2004

HATE ETERNAL/ex-MORBID ANGEL guitarist Erik Rutan has issued the following statement in memory of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

"I have thought so long and hard on what I could possibly say that has not already been said about the tragic death of Dimebag Darrell Abbott but I felt compelled to make a statement with the utmost respect for a true guitar god and a tremendous person.

"I had the pleasure of touring with PANTERA while in MORBID ANGEL on two seperate occassions. We toured together for 16 weeks. Those 16 weeks were life changing for me in so many ways. Being a guy who has just been content touring and recording records all these years, to have the opportunity to play arenas with one of the biggest and best metal bands out there was overwhelming, for I never thought that opportunity would ever happen yet it did. It changed my life forever. I watched Dimebag play almost every night, and every night I was amazed at the pure talent that poured out of him and the incredible emotion he possessed. Out of respect and knowing that there were always people hanging around on stage and backstage I always tried to stay out of the way. I was just so grateful and overwhelmed with the whole experience.

"One day Dimebag asked me, 'Brother, how come you don't ever come on stage or backstage to hang out?' and I told him, 'I did not want to bother anyone or get in the way.' His response was, 'You're going to play a song with us one night,' which totally made me so nervous like I had never played a show in my life. A week went by and I heard nothing about it.

"Then one night in San Jose, CA, 10 minutes before PANTERA went on, security came to get me and said I was wanted in the backstage dressing room. I literally shit my pants with wonder. Dimebag said, 'Tonight is the night brother.' He showed me 'Walk' in like 5 minutes on a totally different tuned guitar and he said, 'See you up there.' I remember not believing this was happening. I practiced and then went to the stage. I came out for the encore and he announced my name and I played with PANTERA for over 12,000 people. That was the last tour PANTERA ever did. He let me play one of his beloved guitars, the rebel flag guitar through one of his multiple stacks.

"It changed my life in so many ways and meant so much to me that someone of his stature and fame would reach out like that with such generosity and how down to earth he was. It was one of the biggest events in my life that I will never forget. I was and still am a part of an underground band, yet he treated me with the same respect he would show a musician who had won Grammys. It was life-altering. I have a video tape of the show and always pop it in once in a while to remminice on one of the best things in my life that meant so much. I dont think he ever realized how much that meant to me and I will always be grateful to Dimebag for that, as well as for Vinnie, Phil and Rex for these are memories I will always cherish.

"I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to Vinnie and the Abbott family and to PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN's family and crew for the loss of not only a tremendous guitarist, but an outstanding person. He will so be missed.

"Dimebag, you will always be a legend and a person I will never let die nor ever forget, your spirit will carry on forever!""
