I really believe there are NO BASS PLAYERS in New England (at least that are worth a damn). I have been searching along with our group for over two years. EVERY single ass hole out there wants to play guitar and or sing. Most people say take a shitty guitarist are demote them to bass. My theory on the lack of bass players is the fact that there are NO current bands in the 'mainstream' that are fresh with a leading bass player such as Flea and Claypool from the 90's. There is nothing broadly available that 'inspires' people to play bass. Really too bad, bass is one of the more powerful factors of any band if used properly. Sorry, I play drums.

hmmm...

i live in new england.

i play bass in the heuristic.

i also tend to agree with anonymous, to a point. there isnt an iconic "bass dude" right now to get little billy into anything more complicated than tool. and while rhythmically complex, it isnt fucking rocket science to figure those guys out.

however (and listen up, shitty guitar players relegated to bass detail) there is hope. while easier to get into playing off the wall stuff listening to primus, mr. bungle and their ilk, it isnt a necessity. there is an amazing variety of innovative music to draw inspiration from. THINK OUTSIDE THE FOUR STRINGED BOX. listen to stuff like battles, hella, enemymine, fiesel, and psyopus to get new ideas and direction. the lack of innovative bass playing is a huge part of the plateau metal seems to be sitting on right now.

the bassist is lame if he doesn't listen to jaco. if you don't know who jaco is you don't deserve to be a musician such as john scofield for guitar, and elvin jones for the drums.

Playing Bass is awesome

Bassists are able to ride a fucking lion.

hmm no bass players in New England huh to give a damn about thats funny...my band happens to have two of them, and we're both damn fucking good. just so happens that drummers seem to the hardest thing to come across not bassplayers, and on that note Knives Out/Knife Invades Throat is still looking for a drummer. we play tech grind with some black metal thrown in....kinda like a better version of Pig Destroyer oh i said it. Ha !

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2004 8:52am

oh man... I have a new desktop image...

typically I don't care about bass players. live, it's harder to hear them and a lot of them just blend into the background. the bassplayers that are fun to see are usually the ones that play amazing AND go ape shit.
I think if any bassplayer should be an icon, it's fred from psyopus.. he plays AMAZING...
2 bassplayers I can think of do flips while playing, tim (invocation of nehek) and mr. charliebrowneye.

Where in arlington do you practice?
I have a handmade ESP and a hartke stack.
I have my liscense, but no car.... could be a setback.

rev, do i qualify as a good bass player?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Nov 12,2004 6:56pm
I have yet to "hear" you in dehumanized on a recording.
I wasn't really paying attention last time I listened to kalopsia.

live, you don't do flips, but you do go into the crowd and mosh AND you actually move around on stage.
so until I hear a dehumanized recording with you on it, I'll give you a 6 out of 9

toggletoggle post by Kalopsia   at Nov 12,2004 7:26pm
fair enough. not to mention i'm not on the Kalopsia recording lol.

whatever kid. bass is fucking fun. you're right that there's a lack of lead bass in popular music but there's a lack of alot of things in popular music these days too. i like to view my fellow bass players as working stiffs who never get the credit we deserve because egotistic guitar players piss and moan if they're slightly unheard ; ) Guitar players crave the spot light, bass players just want to play. I like to act like luke warm water in between the fire and ice. bass players are always chill and low key.
anyways lynch mobb needs a bassist, help this dude out!

it will be fun i'll tell ya that much rev and so far i'm havin fun in the band im starting up right now. no trying to be the next bury your dead or unearth in this band, no constant mosh parts, and for those posi kids no two step bullshit and definetly nothing posi. it's all about playin both styles of music we all love and just having fun with it. and for bass players talent is good but we don't want no les claypool or anything like that we just want someone whos all about playin metal/hardcore and havin fun with it. someone help a brotha out haha

too bad i gave up music for sucking at life

What about 'side projects'? I remember 'all-the-way-back-in-96' when every band member from western mass was involved in about three or four other bands, such as members from Barrit playing in Bane, that played in Converge, etc. (be kinda funny to see a tree outline of all the associations like six degrees of Kevin Bacon). Are members, i.e. bassists especially, still fond of 'seeing-other-bands' or is it now a going steady kinda thing? Why can't a guitarist from one band play bass for another, or drummer, vox, etc? Someone has to do something and give a little here, there is a serious chronic need for bass players in the northeast. (oh yeah, someday I'll get a real screen name, just too damn lazy for now).

toggletoggle post by whiskey_weed_and_women  at Nov 13,2004 8:20am
again i still say bass players aren't the problem, the problem is lack of drummers and quality one in the North East

toggletoggle post by bassist with no car at Nov 17,2004 8:16pm
it sucks you can't find a good bassist. So far the bands i have been in have praised me for being the most creative bassist they've met. If I had a car I'd probably be emailing you, but I don't.

toggletoggle post by lynch mobb at Nov 17,2004 10:49pm
thats nice, even though creativity doesnt matter to us. like i said NO les claypool wannabes please

maybe thats their way of saying you suck... ?

toggletoggle post by bass play, no car at Nov 18,2004 3:12pm
nah, I know

toggletoggle post by bass play, no car at Nov 18,2004 3:14pm
Nah, I know I don't suck. I'm not a les claypool wannabe. I just don't like playing like a bassplayer, root notes bore the fuck out of me, I like to be doing something constantly...my last band I was in let me do a lot of things I wanted to do, but they weren't serious enough so I quit. The current band I am in is allowing me to use most of my basslines and songs I have written...a lot of it is pretty spazzy (grind meets atheist if it had to be classified roughly), and the guitarists write whatever sounds melodic I guess.
