get a pair of bose noise cancelling in ear headphones. then get a 1/8"-1/4" input adapter with a really long extension and there you go. those headphones will cut right through the mix and you'll still get a ton of band in the background because practice is much louder than the every day life noises the headphones are trying to elminate. those are 100 dollars, which is a lot less than the 5-6 you mentioned above. i could be wrong but im pretty sure in ear monitor is a fancy term for headphones so it should work well.
