Black Metal/Neoclassical.
That was the genre description I was granted when I looked up this band on Metal-Archives. Black Metal/Neoclassical. Let that sink in for a moment. How can that even be possible? Black metal and neoclassical music are 100% completely different - one focuses on depressing atmosphere and the other on insane shredding, yet this band is somehow both! Well sadly, it is not black metal composed of neo-classical riffs, but neoclassical in the sense that this is black metal with piano, drums and vocals. And how does it stand? Well let's see:
First I'll get the secondary instruments out of the way: the drums are fine, well-played, in tune, keeping a beat, all that standard shit. Nothing bad, but nothing out of the ordinary. The vocals are pretty weak though; they sound like real attempts at a good black metal voice, but they fall short of the mark somewhat. They do however, provide atmosphere, so in a way you could say they accomplished their task.
The biggest component of the music though, is the piano. I am no piano aficionado, and I don't claim to be some kind of classical music expert, so I have absolutely no idea if the piano is well-played, in tune or anything. I can say however, that it sounds great with the music! The doomy vibe the piano gives off fits the gothic and "elder" feel of the band's music very, very well. In some ways, a piano is even better than guitars in this instance!
One of the things I haven't really touched on are the soundscapes/ambiance in this album. There's a bit of it, but it mainly serves to tell a story and provide a sort of foreshadowing to the musical parts. It's good, but I'm guessing most of it was just downloaded off a website and not recorded IRL, so there's not much to say there. It works, that's about it!
All in all, this is a fine experimental doom/black metal album. In fact, I'm not sure if you would even call it metal, or just experimental music (MA certainly thinks so, lol!) but it's a good listen nonetheless!
