Sets a new standard for death metal. 10 skulls.........buy or die.........

Nile's new album meets and exceeds the incredibly lofty expectations that have been placed on it since the success of Black Seeds of Vengeance. In Their Darkened Shrine had a lot to live up to considering their previous album was one of the best received of that year, and it seems that this album will be finding its way onto a lot of year end lists as well. Nile have constructed a flawless album that sees them playing to their strengths and propelling themselves forward at the same time. It's not surprising that Nile has come out with such a strong album. But what is surprising is that they've come out with an album that is ultimately more successful than their last two masterpieces. The storylines are more in depth, the lyrics more expressive, the riffs more intense and the atmosphere more chilling. No matter how much time I spend with this record, I can't help but feel I'm still not getting all of it. I feel like I just might not actually possess all of the faculties needed to truly know this album. This means that every time I listen to it I'm treated to a new experience. Nile have positioned themselves as the American death metal band to beat, consistently challenging themselves as well as others to reach new levels of perfection. Every song is a mini-masterpiece, and there isn't the slightest inkling of filler anywhere to be found on this album. I'm not ashamed to admit that the lyrical themes are well above my attention span, but for those of you who get off on that type of shit, a cursory glance show these lyrics are as challenging and in depth as you would expect from this band. Nile also continue to deliver the goods when it comes to mixing technicality and brutality. This album crushes as much as it inspires and is simply unrivaled in the current metal world. No one has done an even modestly successful job of imitating this sound. I could go on and on about this album, but that would just be a waste of space. This is on a short list for album of the year, and any fan of music, let alone metal, should have this album in their collection.

I just think fans of Nile should keep this music underground because it's slowly reaching a level of mainstream attention.

Too strong for the weaks,to misterious for the fools, but brilliant for the eternity...Bands like Nile are the future standard of death-metal.

good hopefully nile will be on mtv soon. Id like to see that for real. As long as they don't alter their style and start having some guy come in with nu metal vocals. Either way. I don't see them becoming 'mtv mainstream' anytime soon. If you mean Metal Scene Mainstream I don't think there is anything wrong with it really. Morbid Angel is pretty popular and they still own everyone. =)

restores my faith to death metal

what can I say but Nile has done it again. These guys are amazing the album I feel is a supreme masterpeice.

Damn...what can I say. I have been waiting for this release since being blown away by "Black Seeds" 2 years ago, and I got what I expected...brutal, intelligent, technical death metal at it's finest. Already this CD is becoming a permanent resident in my CD player, and I've only owned it for 2 days. The songs are heavier than ever, the lyrics are more cryptic (thank Anubis for Sander's song explanations!) than ever, and the band sounds tighter than ever. Although i was sad to see both Chief Spires and Pete Hammoura leave the fold, the new lineup keeps up the tradition of making Nile one of the premier death metal bands around today. They set the mark for what death metal bands should strive for, and once again, they leave my mouth dropped open, and my ears bleeding. Buy this album!

This is the only Nile album I own. I don't like it much...bores me quite a lot. The only standout is Unas Slayer of Gods, it actually does something interesting. All the rest are mindless aggression. I like having melody in there, like Opeth or Death. Not this...yawn.

:Nov 26,2002 10:31pm - post by anonymous
wow, anyone who says this album is boring is a complete idiot. Are you sure you arent accidentally listening to your yanni cd, douche bag?

:Dec 12,2002 11:44pm - post by anonymous (grindyourcunt666)
jesus christ nile fuckin blows ,fuck theyre getting progressivly worse i mean amongst the catacombs was good but this shit sucks ,jesus same exact shit as before just as boring nothing ground breaking here but of course itll sell with the idiots that are into death metal these days ,christ the new singer is so gay live too he looks like a fuckin pro wrestler this cd may as well just be a fuckin remix of black seeds in conclusion gay gay gay !!!!

:Dec 18,2002 3:49am - post by TheGreatSpaldino
Screw you man... Yanni is fucking awesome.

:Dec 25,2002 3:47pm - post by AllanHoldsworth
Once again, amazing playing. This drummer does the killing like no one else, bringing more to the table than before. But I just can't stay interested for 50 minutes. Very repetative and not memorable. The first track is all I really need, after that it gets shut off and put back on the shelf for a while.

:Dec 27,2002 12:07pm - post by EYEH8GOD
I bought this album and I was a bit disappointed . Too boring for me, but I'm not so much into death metal, anyway.

:Jan 1,2003 3:06am - post by anonymous
This is the best DM album of the year!

:Jan 9,2003 3:43pm - post by anonymous
one of the most dissapointing releases of the Year 2002!!!!
Check out Bloodbath-Ressurection through Carnage!

:Jan 12,2003 10:36pm - post by anonymous
Whoever labels this album as "boring" is a fucking idiot. There's no need to bag it just because you're too much of a dumb cunt to notice the finer things that make this cd a fucking masterpiece.

:Jan 12,2003 10:56pm - post by anonymous
Nile's latest release is as brutal as hell but thankfully doesn't sink into two-dimensional screaming and basic riffs like Cannibal Corpse (Cannibal Corpse are still a great band, it's just that they're style wouldn't work for Nile and would really just be a waste of their immense talent). The level of intricate technicality is mind-blowing - this album is even better than Black Seeds of Vengeance. Truly a masterpiece.

:Jan 13,2003 9:44pm - post by anonymous
By Seth's crusty shit, this album blew me away! These guys are fucking geniuses. Every single song is brilliant. Nile have always seemed epic, and In Their Darkened Shrines only reinforces this notion. Trust me, it's the best death metal release in years.

:Jan 13,2003 11:36pm - post by anonymous
I really didn't know much about NILE, but I bought Darkest Shrines cuz I'm going to see them play with Napalm Death here in Denver. I was really blown away!!! Sarcophagus and unas slayer of the gods are instant classics. I can't wait to see them live!!!

:Jan 17,2003 9:52pm - post by anonymous
Every single song on this album is excellent. The Blessed Dead has got to be one of the best tracks I've ever heard. Nile are just so fucking epic and crushing. And the four part title track killed me. Get this cd now.

:Jan 17,2003 9:57pm - post by anonymous
A masterpiece.

:Jan 19,2003 9:44am - post by anonymous

Rotten Sound has faster drums

:Feb 19,2003 5:00am - post by anonymous
boring. stagnant. monotonous. a big step down, for my dollar. the endurance and execution here is astounding, but the material is bland to my ears, leaving me wishing for the twists and turns of catacombs... the occasional unabashed simple-yet-devastating riff... the surprise segues... the better blast beats... the more blistering production. this new one is brutal, but only provides excitement at the level of something like origin. blah

:Mar 1,2003 3:31pm - post by rilontsky
it's all been said before. Yes nile is an amazing band, Yes, in their darkened shrines is an amazing album. Fantastic lyrics, riffs and drums. I can't stay interested for the whole album tho.. but that's just because there's not enough personality in it for me. But you gotta give credit where credit where credit is due, and pound for pound this is one of the best releases of the year. The leaders of the new school.

:Mar 26,2003 10:20am - post by fds at hotmail.com#
Best Cd out at this point.....creativity wise i'd prolly say Acacia....but Nile has opened the hole to hell....and the flames are pretty fucking hot.......FETUS MARCH 30th at FAT CATS !!!! I'VE BEEN WAITING!

:Apr 5,2003 8:34am - post by thegreatspaldino
stupid fucking Meshuggah nut hugger...

:Dec 17,2003 3:11pm - post by anonymous
Brutal, intelligent, magick, and innovative. what the fuck more could you ask for? there is no way that Meshuggah could be this heavy, tracks like Sarcophagus meld thunderous power with melody to a tee. Good fucking stuff.

:Dec 17,2003 9:13pm - post by anonymous (jellyfish)
the best death metal band on the scene. Heavier than Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation, better drums than dying fetus, and eviler sounding than Deicide. Only band in the genre that compares is Morbid Angel.(go figure)

:Dec 31,2003 3:46pm - post by anonymous (swamplorddvm)
OH MY FUCKING FICTIONAL GOD!!! This is to you ANONYMOUS. Give me a fucking break with that "polyrythmic bull shit". I'ts sad if a band has to depend on a stupid "style" of rythim to make them "good"(cool). NILE kicks ass!!! I'm with spaldin on this one, NUT HUGGER!!!

:Jan 31,2004 4:56pm - post by anonymous
