Well, I finally decided to stop putting it off, and went ahead and bought Dimmu Borgir's new re-recorded version of their old classic, Stormblast. Needless to say, I much prefer the original to the new.
The first major quality I realized about this new version, besides the obvious update in production, is that it is much more guitar driven than the original. Gone is much of the beautiful sweeping synth/piano that dominated the overall sound and atmosphere of the original; this time a lot of the melodies are present in the guitar work, and the synth, while still audible, takes more of a backseat in the sound.
The other thing I noticed is that some of the music has been changed; in certain parts of songs a different drum beat is used or a guitar riff is altered.
Overall, the remake isn't bad, the songs are certainly powerful, but at the time of this writing, I find listening to this is more interesting than it is enjoyable. As mentioned earlier, I like the old version much better. To me, the update in production and guitar driven sound takes away a lot of the atmosphere and feeling from the songs.
As a musician and artist, you're your own worst critic, and that is exactly what drove Shagrath and Silenoz to redo this album. They didn't do it for you or me, and they didn't do it for the money. They did it for themselves and their own artistic satisfaction, and while I personally think they could have done without the remake, their feelings justify the decision.
